Riverwoods was founded on the principles of living in and protecting the natural world and has become a model to other communities. Residents have traditionally celebrated Earth Day by holding a Clean Up Day to pick up trash along the roadways. Started by a 7th grade boy scout, Jack McArdle, Jr. on April 25, 1970, it grew into an annual event.
The first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970 to bring awareness to environmental problems. Today Earth Day has evolved to not only bring awareness, but also action as well as to appreciate the beauty of nature.
